BF109F-2
Fuselage Construction - Part 3

My BF109 3-View

The horizontal and vertical stabilizer parts are made from 1/8" hard balsa. The piece in the upper left is the base for the cockpit hatch. It is made of two layer of 1/16" balsa and 1/16" ply (where the hatch hold-down screw will go).
The cockpit hatch is made by constructing a 1/16" x 1/4" balsa frame (2 layers). The rear cross piece is two layers of 1/16" ply (for the hatch screw support). Bulkhead F3T and F4T are glue to the hatch frame and a 1/8" balsa stringer is added.
The hatch area is sheeted with two pieced of 1/16" balsa. (Only one side of the hatch is sheeted in this photo. The read cockpit bulkhead is 3/32" balsa glued only to the bottom frame. Glue this in place while the hatch is temporarily in place on the fuselage with a piece of wax paper between the 3/32" sheet and the bulkhead on the fuselage.
Here the bottom side of the completed hatch is shown next to the fuselage.
The hatch fitted to the fuselage. (A 1/4" x 1/16" strip of balsa is added along the models cockpit area to support the plastic canopy which will be added during final assembly.
This photo shows the BF109 with a cardboard canopy taped in place to get an idea of how things are coming together.
A sideview of the fuselage with the canopy area hatch. It's now time to finish a few things up on the wing so we can mate it to the fuselage.
