Fuselage Construction Part 1

The fuselage is for the IL-2M aircraft. The construction is fully detailed on full size 1:1 scale CAD drawings. Wingspan of this model is 34" and wing area is 187 sq. in. and fuselage length is 27"
This photo shows the basic fuselage components laid out on the building board. All of the parts are available in the laser cut short kit. The fuslage basically consists of a 1/16" balsa box formed by balsa and plywood formers.
Start the fuselage construction by adding 1/16" balsa doublers to the inside of the main fuselage side panels.
Glue former F5 to the right hand fuselage panel making sure it is vertical. Add 1/2" triangular stock along the bottom of the aft fuselage panels. Cut several relief "slits" in the tri stock from two different direction to aid in aliging to the curve of the lower fuselage. The triangular stock will be shaped to a rounded cross section later.
Another photo showing the detail of preparing a right and left-hand fuselage side panel. 1/16" plywood former F2, F3 F4 and the 1/16" plywood motor mount is also shown.
Before gluing F1 and F3 to the fuselage, apply a layer of .50 oz fiberglass cloth to each side of F1 and F3 to add additional strength to these critical parts. Use thin Ca glue to soak the cloth onto the part.
Now glue F2 and F3 to the right-hand fuselage panel making sure they are vertical (90 degrees). Do NOT glue the F1 motor mount former in place at this time.
Another photo looking forward at the right-hand fuselage panel. The left-hand panels is identical but reversed except no formers. The fuselage has a constant width between these formers.
