Wing Construction

The wing design is for the early (1939-1943) IL2 and Series 3 aircraft. The wing construction is fully detailed on full size 1:1 scale CAD drawings. Wingspan of this model is 34" and wing area is 187 sq. in.
The wing is all balsa construction consisting of 1/16" thick balsa skins and internal 1/16" ribs. Here is a photo showing the laser cut wing components laid out for assembly. The wing is assembled flat on the building board. The first step is to edge glue the 2 - 1/16" pieces that make up the lower wing skin. The inside surface of the lower skins are etched to show the wing rib locations.
Prior to gluing the ribs in place the aileron torque tubes must be fabricated. They are made of 1/16" music wire going through a brass tube. One end is bent to insert into the aileron and the other is bent to accept either standard aileron linkage hardware or a flattened brass tube drilled for a clevis. Use whatever method you like. Glue the brass tube to the skin in the etched location. DO NOT glue the aileron end to the skin. This must remain free to allow removal of the aileron.
Glue the ailerons to the lower skin aligning them to the marks on the skin. The ClarkY airfoil is flat on the bottom so it makes assembly easy. Shim the leading edge of the lower skin with scrap balsa to come in contact with the ribs as the curve upward near the leading edge. Use thin CA to glue the ribs in place.
One the ribs are glued in place, add the 1/16" sub-leading edge strip to the front of the ribs gluing to both the ribs and the lower sheet. Gently sand/bevel the sub-leading edge strip to match the contour of the ribs to prepare for the top sheeting.
Glue the 1/8" aileron "spars" to the lower skin. DO NOT glue to each other, as the match line is where the aileron will be cut free from the finished wing panel. Use a sanding block to gently sand the top of the 1/8" spars to match the airfoil shape. Cut the trailing edge off ribs 6,7 and 8 and use them as aileron ribs. The wing tips will be added after the top sheeting and leading edge is added.
Glue 1/4" thick scraps of balsa to the lower wing skin on each side of the 1/16" music wire aileron actuator. DO NOT glue to the wire. Note that the aileron actuator is free to rotate above the assembly. Use a sanding block to bevel the trailing edge of the lower wing skin to match the airfoil shape. This will allow the top sheeting to match with the lower sheeting at the trailing edge.
