Ilyushin Il-2M Sturmovik
A scale electric powered R/C model

Wing Construction Page III
The wing design is for the early (1939-1943) IL2 and Series 3 aircraft.
The wing construction is fully detailed on full size 1:1 scale CAD drawings. Wingspan
of this model is 34" and wing area is 187 sq. in.
Use 80 grit sandpaper to shape the balsa tip to blend with the airfoil shape of the tip rib
and the leading edge.
Bottom view of the wing panel showing the partially laser cut aileron hinge line. Use a #11 exacto
knife to cut along the hinge line up through the top sheeting. The aileron should come free as shown in the next photo.
(Provided you didn't glue the hinge line spars together or glue the actuator rod to the lower sheet)
Once the aileron is removed from the wing panel bevel the leading edge slightly (along the centerline) to
allow up and down movement of the aileron. I use CA hinges and temporarily install them at this stage to check the movement
of the aileron with the actuator rod.
Both wing panels are complete and it's time to joing the wing panels.
Use the provided dihedral guages (1/8" balsa) to elevate the tip ribs of each panel 1 1/8". The
guages include the 1/8" washout to till the trailing edge up. I use 5 minute expoxy to join the wing panels
at the root rib. They should fit flush if you used the guage to set the angle. Weight the wing down while the
expoxy sets.
The wing panel is essentially complete at the point until we add the wheel well nacelles and radiator
scoops to the underside. This will be done later after the wing is fitted to the fuselage and receives an initial layer
of .50 fiberglass cloth and resin finish prep. At this point, however, add a 1 1/4" wider strip of .50 cloth to the
root joint by soaking it with thin Ca glue. We want to add a little extra strength here. It is no fun to have a
wing fold in a high-G manuever.
