The KI-61 is simple to build for the average kit builder. The wing is all balsa and assembled flat on the work bench. Templates for all wing ribs are included on the plans. The horizontal stabilizer, elevators and vertical fin are all 1/8" from solid 1/8" sheet balsa.

The fuselage is scale in plan and profile and consists of 1/16" and 1/16" balsa or ply formers and 1/16" balsa sides. The formers are glued to one side of the fuselage side panels and then the second side is added to create a basic square box. The fuselage sides wrap around the top half of the formers to give the "Tony" it's characteristic look.

Plans for the KI-61 "Hien" were developed using available 3-view illustrations and profile images of the aircraft captured from IL2 Forgotten Battles flight simulator by UBsoft. The drawings and illustrations are imported into AutoCAD and used as a guide for development of the model 3-view. Once the 3-view is completed the construction details are worked out based on the ouline drawings.

Flying Characteristics 03.28.2006 - Maiden Flights The aircraft was first flown on this date equipped with an AXI 2212/20 brushless motor, an APC 9x4.5 prop and a Thunder Power 2100 11.1 volt lipo battery pack. This aircraft is a great flyer! Fast, responsive yet very forgiving in stalls and landing. The airplane has enough power as equpped to pull easily through big loops at 70% throttle. Roll response is good and all aerobatic manuervers can be performed with this aircraft. Landing are easy with a nice slow glide at minimal throttle then cut the power for a soft slow landing on the turf. You won't be disappointed with the flying characteristics of the easy-to-build all-balsa aircraft. Plans and short kits are available. PDF plans can be downloaded immediately. Optional printed plan sets will be Express Mailed to you upon payment. The PDF files are 1:1 scale and formatted for printing on larger format printers capable of using a media size of at least 36"x24". ( Quick print businesses like Kinko's, Office Depot, can print the drawings 1:1 from a disk for a minimal charge.) Plans may also be printed in small sections (tiled) on standard 8 1/2"x11" printers if desired.
