| When both the left and right wing panels are assembled you are ready to add the top 1/16" balsa sheeting.
The top sheeting comes in two pieces as shown in the top of the photo. Join the two sheet with thick Ca glue and sand
the joint smooth. |
 |
| Before installing the top sheeting assemble a washout shim using 1/8" square balsa. The shim is tapered
from 1/8" thick at the joint to zero thickness at the root and leading edge points. You will slide this shim under the
wing panel and keep it in place when installing the top sheeting. This shim imparts an upward "twist" to the wing
at the tip trailing edge (washout) This helps make the airplane more stable at slow speed and reduces the tendency to
tip stall. Use contact cement (I use Barge) to glue the top wing skin to the lower assembly. Apply a thin amount
of glued to the lower assembly where it will contact the skin and the inside of the top skin. When the contact cement
is dry to the touch, starting at the trailing edge, press the top skin in place and weight down till the glue has set. |
 |
|
Trim the top sheeting flush with the sub-leading edge. Next you will add the 1/8" leading edge cap. |
 |
| Prepare the wing tip blocks by laminating two layer of 1/4" balsa from the laser cut parts set.
Place the washout shim under the wing panel again and glue the tip block to the tip rib. |
 |
| Using coarse sandpaper shape the balsa wing tip block to match the shape of the tip rib. Gently sand the
edge of the wingtip block to a rounded contour and blend into the leading edge and aileron. |
 |
| Cut the aileron free from the main wing panel. The lower sheeting is laser cut along this line which
runs between the internal 1/8" spars. Sand the leading edge of the aileron to a slight bevel as shown on the plans
to allow up/down aileron movement. |
 |
| This photo shows the completed prep of the aileron and a wing tip dihedral gauge made of 1/16" plywood.
You will place one of these dihedral gauges under the tip rib of the left and right wing panel when joining the wing
panels. |
 |
| With the dihedral gauge under each tip join the wing panels at the root rib using 5-minute epoxy or
thick slow Ca glue. The wing panel is 99% complete at this point. The center joint will be reinforced with fiberglass cloth
later after the wing has been fitted to the fuselage. |
