Wing Construction

Start the wing construction with the center section. Cut the lower wing skins to the shape of the plan. Mark the location of wing ribs and the rib reference line on the sheeting. The center rib is 1/8" balsa. All other ribs are 1/16"
Cut optional lightening holes in the center section ribs if desired to save weight. Every little bit helps. Fabricate the ailerons control linkage from 1/16" ID brass tubing and 1/16" OD music wire. Glue the brass tubing to the bottom sheeting. Note the 1/16" sub-leading edge glued to the front of the wing ribs.
Bevel the bottom sheeting at the trailing edge to bond with top sheeting. (See wing plans) Glue the 1/16" top sheeting to the wing ribs and sub-leading edge. Since the center section thickness varies from the center rib to the outer aileron rib glue the top sheeting on with joint at the center rib.
The outer wing panels are constructed in a similar manner. Gut the bottom sheet to the shape of the plan and mark the rib and aileron locations on the sheet. The aileron ribs are the tail pieces of the wing ribs cut at the aileron hinge joint. Angle the first rib to allow for the dihedral angle of the outer wing panels. (Raise the tip 1 1/4" to set the rib angle. The aileron hinge line is made from 1/8" wide balsa strips.
Glue the top sheeting on the outer wing panel. GLue the 1/8" balsa leading edge to the wing panels and sand to shape. Mark the location of the aileron and then cut the aileron from the wing down the hinge line between the two 1/8" balsa strips installed in the previous step.
With the center section flat on the work bench raise the outer wing panel so the last rib (before the balsa wing tip) is raised 1 1/4". Glue the outer wing panels to the center section. Reinforce the dihedral joint with light (.56 oz) f/g cloth and thin CA glue.
The wing is now substantially complete. The tail surfaces have been cut from 1/8" thick balsa. We are now ready to move on to the fuselage construction.
